River Cottage
This large side extension to a century-old converted boathouse on the banks of the River Thames in Bourne End created a new side entrance to a utility and boot room at the rear, and a new kitchen and breakfast room to the river side, all raised above flood resilient levels.
This raised vantage position, combined with large corner glazed sliding doors offers sweeping and uninterrupted views of the flowing river, and the light from overhead rooflights and clerestory glazing bounces off the deliberately bright material palette.
This ‘white scheme’ throughout was inspired by the swans who regularly swim up to the building at high waters. The minimalist and fresh aesthetic of the interiors takes a backseat to this glorious setting.
